23 February 25Good Morning Everyone,
Ash Wednesday
Today we begin the holy season of Lent with a simple but powerful sign: ashes placed upon our foreheads. As the priest says, “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return,” or “Repent and believe in the Gospel.”
Ash Wednesday is not about sadness; it is about truth and grace.
First, the ashes remind us of our humanity. We are fragile. We are not eternal on this earth. Life is a gift. When we remember that we are dust, pride falls away. We become humble before God and gentle with one another.
Second, this day calls us to repentance. In the Gospel (Matthew 6:1–6,16–18), Jesus speaks of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving — not as public performance, but as interior transformation. Lent is spiritual training of the heart. Not for show, but for conversion.
Third, Ash Wednesday is a day of hope. The ashes are placed in the shape of the cross. Even in our weakness, we are marked by Christ. Sin does not have the final word. Mercy does. The cross leads to resurrection.
Let this Lent be intentional. Pray a little more. Fast with purpose. Give with love. If we walk these forty days sincerely, Easter will not just be a celebration — it will be a renewal of our lives.
With prayers,
Fr. Joseph
